Take Note..... by Shaun Dangerfield.

I'm sure if your from Brixton you will already know about Brixton's own currency that is in circulation, It's a new thing for me I missed the boat on the original idea and 2009 release so catching it on the second wave had me reading.
The Brixton pound - useable only between SW2 and the SW9 postcode was set up in 2009 to bring life and growth into the local area and local trade encouraging people to spend their money locally because basically if you bought the Brixton currency you have no choice but to spend it within the area.

But the clever side to it (and one of the reason's I looked twice) is that they use a variety of printing techniques and famous faces and being a massive Bowie fan I instantly thought "I'll get one of those just to keep" and I would imagine I wasn't the only one.
So with David Bowie making a very exotic arty appearance on the £10 who am I to say no.
Using watermarked paper and colourful holograms, foil and fluorescent ink they are pretty jazzy to look at, a massive money spinner obviously but a clever idea I think.
A local design team made the new 2011 batch of notes replacing the older 2009 currency.... "This Ain't Rock'n'Roll ltd" are the design company behind it and have done a pretty good job too in my humble opinion.

The new batch contain Len Garrison on the pound note, Luol Deng on the fiver, Mr Bowie himself on the common tenner and the second lady to be awarded the George Cross Violette Szabo is respectfully on the £20 note.

When it's cold outside... By Saul Wilks

I'm in a right chipper mood, the weathers so ace at the moment, I'm properly in my element. All the summer stripes have been well and truly jettisoned and the coats, knits and heavy weight shirts have come back out to play...

Just about to take a stroll on this fine evening and thought I'd post up what I've been sporting today. Lots of nice rustic apparel and threads from Garbstore, Folk, APC, Pointer and a rather snappy lambswool from Oi Polloi.

I hope you're enjoying the weather as much as me!

ISM Records present Futurism promo mix...By Saul Wilks

On the Boogie Cartel front we've got some ace things going on at the moment starting with this coming Saturdays Futurism party with the ISM records collective. To be asked to play at their opening night is something of an honor as the label is a stalwart on the modern disco scene with releases from some of the biggest names around.

To go with the promotion of the night I decided to break my silence and recorded this following mix. Encapsulating a number of my favourite jams and joints at the moment, this is pure Boogie Cartel sleaze and represents what we're about perfectly - for any regular reader, you'll probably know what to expect so I invite you to have a listen and enjoy.

An Autumn days get up...By Saul Wilks

I dragged myself out of bed this morning at the unearthly hour of half 6, anticipating some frosty ground and some nice opportunities to take a few pictures. The sun was just coming up and all seemed well, however, the sun slowly but surely crept back in and was in turn replaced by grey overcast cloud cover. Mission abandoned and one very tired Mr Wilks climbed back into bed.

Fast forward a few hours  and I'm ready to go out exploring, armed with my trusty camera to hopefully get some decent snaps. It's deliciously cold outside at the moment, so what more excuse do I need to get dressed to suit? I've been waiting for this cold weather patiently...

Hello Autumn...

Thread's and Tread's.... by Shaun Dangerfield.

A simple what was worn, and order of the day from the weekend including Turtle mocha, some snazzy light's, probably "the" best chocolate cake I've ever had and Noah & the Whale (who were very good much to my amazement).
Topped off with a lovely little 2-0 win for my Albion and I had an easy but very decent weekend.

Acid Magic.... by Shaun Dangerfield.

For the music head's amongst you who read this blog I'm sure that the DJ duo Aeroplane will be known by you and are still loved by many even after their eventual split over musical differences and direction.
Aeroplane still continues today as one half while Stephan Fasano reworked himself as "The Magician" playing similar records as they did as a duo.
I used to love Aeroplane and I will still sit there and listen to what is put out by both Aeroplane and the Magician although my taste's have veered off slightly no one can deny how great they were together and also now on their own.
I don't think I would have blogged about either of them though if truth be told until I heard the news from Switzerland the weekend.

The Magician jet's around the world playing various parties and clubs and obviously loves doing so, I saw his notification on Facebook that he was playing in Bern Switzerland and that he was looking forward to playing.
Then on the Sunday there was a message asking for witnesses to come forward with evidence after he was hospitalised as someone walked up to where he was DJ'ing and through acid in his face at 2:30am.
Shocking really, I just couldn't help thinking why ? for what reason ? and then after all that why in Switzerland of all places ? I mean they keep their noses clean, stay out of world war's and sit on the fence but turn up and play electronic disco and you'll get a face full of acid. Weird.
You'll be pleased to know he's well and doing fine and was posting on Facebook today so not as bad as what I thought had happened, but still there's thing's that happen in the world and although this is minor in comparison I just thought what a pointless act from a pointless human being.

So be warned if your DJ'ing in Switzerland anytime take some fine chocolates or a good clock/watch with you and it just might save you a face full of acid.

Anyroad while I'm here speaking about him for those that don't know of him I'll put some of his work up and his mixes which are always numbered as "magic tape 12" and 13, and 14 and so on, some of it is great some of it is not my cup of tea but you can make your own mind's up on his electronic disco synthy pop and beat's.
He does rework Tyson records though and Tyson is a firm favourite of mine so there is a little spark there....

Hertitage Research Nantucket...By Saul Wilks.

Continuing on from my last post, I recently notched up another fine bargain that makes you realise that although eBay is a hot bed of tossers , you really can pick up some amazing clobber from time to time, which probably makes it worthwhile to have an account on there.

Take this current season Heritage Research Nantucket jacket for example. I paid less than a fifth of it's current retail price and I really can't have any complaints. I've been lusting about this jacket since I first seen the collection promo shots and had earmarked to have a pop at it come sale time.

Heritage Research has come under some scrutiny of late, appearing to have sold itself out in the same ways the likes oft One True Saxon have in the past, but I thought from the start that this seasons collection has been one of the best since the label first starting appearing in the likes of Oi Polloi a few years back. Whatever your stance on the matter, there's no mistaking that the quality hasn't gone AWOL.

The Nantucket jacket certainly installs faith in this rhetoric. With a magnitude of thoughtful details and features, it's certainly a stand out piece for me, and the fact that it's released in a gorgeous green waxed cotton pretty much assures it as a sure fire winner. A quality garment and perfect for the colder days that are just around the corner.

A little touch of classiness from YMC...By Saul Wilks.

I've been at it again... trawling the auctions of eBay in search of bargains a plenty and some much needed Autumn wears. I've come up trumps twice (three times if you count an early Christmas present for my girlfriend)

Anyhow, I noted this YMC duster mac go live on the auction site that everyone loves to hate and knew that I had to have a pop at it. After some initial haggling I managed to land it for a very paltry and modest sum that was around a quarter of it's RRP (a few months ago) and to say I'm happy with it would be a very big understatement. It's sublime.

I've been looking around for a smart, A/W over coat for a little while, something classy and smart that I can wear when I'm feeling in that sort of mood. I reckon I hit the nail on the head with this one. The details are endless and the cut and fit are second to none.

It's garments like this from You Must Create that make you realise that they're still one of the most consistent and finest British labels that money can buy.

Boogie Cartel November Edition..... by Shaun Dangerfield.

Right then kid's, elder's, mid life crisis's, dog's, cat's whoever.... We've had a little chat and from the discussion we at Boogie Cartel HQ have decided that on our next night we are going to make sure that the place goes up in the way it should on bonfire night..... with boogie fireworks.
Stabbing synth's and riff's, electric boogie and good old pure disco vibe's will be in order and we have big Big BIG plan's to make this the best edition of The Boogie Cartel, we are hosting the downstair's of the Horse & Groom in Shoreditch this time and London's famous disco pub will be celebrating in style as we will be going hell for leather to make sure that our name roll's off your tongue should that simple question be thrown your way during random conversation some place some where ....."What was the best party you went to in November ?"

Don't say we didn't pre-warn you so if you miss it you only have yourself to blame.

Much love.... Shaun / Captain Turtle.
